Salem, OR (April 5, 2013): The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center has offered a weight loss challenge competition for the last 4 years. On Friday April 5th at 5:00pm during an awards ceremony in their honor, participants are getting a big treat –words of encouragement and advice from NBC’s The Biggest Loser contestant Thomas (TC) Pool.

The Weight Loss Challenge is a 10-week competitive weight loss program that the Kroc Center offers every year. This year participants broke up into 3 teams, each with its own trainer. They met twice a week and, in addition to working out together, they covered topics such as the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, proper technique and basic nutrition. The 24 contestants lost a total of 184 pounds and the male and female with the highest percentage loss of body fat will each go home from the ceremony with the grand prize.

“Breaking participants up into groups had the desired effect of fostering teamwork which builds the foundation for long term lifestyle changes”said Bohannon Faraon, Fitness Coordinator for The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. “People are now making plans and exercising together outside of the program.”

Back in December, The Salvation Army Kroc Corps Community Center welcomed NBC’s The Biggest Loser contestant, Albany resident, “TC”Pool and his family for an afternoon that included climbing the rock wall and playing basketball in the gym. The outing was part of a “Where Are They Now”segment that aired during the show’s season premiere on January 6th.

Although TC was eliminated early from the show, he went on to lose 110 pounds in 5 ½ months for the finale weigh in. See behind the scene photos and video www.salvationarmyexpectchange.org.

“Inviting TC to share his experience with our Weight Loss Challenge participants and our Kroc Corps community seemed like a great match”said Kendall Reid, Director of Operations for The Salvation Army Kroc Corps Community Center. “Sharing his journey and experiences will provide valuable inspiration for our community as they continue towards their own health and wellness goals.”

The public is invited to attend the award ceremony at 5:00 pm on Friday in the chapel at The Salvation Army Kroc Center located at 1865 Bill Frey Drive NE in Salem OR. Reception follows. Please RSVP to 503.566.5762 and visit www.salvationarmysalem.org for more information.
