Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

Landscaping with a Purpose!

All around the site you can see landscaping features that look like meandering river beds, these are called Bio Swales. They are designed and strategically placed around the community center to remove the silt and pollution from water that passes over the site and parking lot before it goes into the storm water system.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!

A recycling program is offered to the community center's employees and visitors. Throughout the center you'll find designated bins for recycling. A variety of materials such as newspapers, magazines, and plastic bottles can be mixed in the same bin. Single stream recycling is convenient and let's everyone participate in reducing the loads to our landfills.

Knock on Driftwood!

The driftwood mantel below the featured art piece in the lounge area of the facility was found on a local beach in Rockaway, Oregon. By using the weather piece of Douglas Fir and incorporating it into the art piece, a symbolic representation of the Oregon coast is integrated into the art piece and a local resource of wood is being used. By using a resource of wood that can be found locally, one eliminates the cost and energy spent on transporting wood from a location outside of the state.

Environmentally Friendly Products!

The carpet you're standing on is made of post-production and post-consumer waste. This long-lasting material is produced to conserve energy and limit waste: comforting for your feet and conscience. The walls are covered with cork, a rapidly renewable resource. The cork is the harvested bark of a tree, so the tree is not cut down to supply the material. In fact, this harvesting process can cause a growth spurt in the Cork Oak tree; once harvested, a new layer of cork regenerates and will be ready to be harvested again in 9 to 10 years.

Go with the (low) flow!

Installing water saving shower heads, faucets and toilets in the restrooms and locker rooms is an affordable way to make big savings in a large facility like the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. The new low-flow fixtures allow the facility to save dollars on their water bill and reduce water use.

Watts on, Watts Off?

Watt?!! Lights turn on automatically as you enter a room, and turn off as you leave the room. This is another design feature throughout the center that allows for savings in electricity. Installing occupancy sensors can avoid having the lights on in spaces that are not being used.

Wipe your feet please!

Here at the entry you can see walk off mats. This carpet is made for rugged use and has a backing on the underside that is 100% recyclable. By placing the mats at the main entries of the facility, less dirt is brought in, and that helps keep the indoor air quality clean.

WTrue colors smell nice!

Like the many colors in a field of flowers, this building has many colors, and they smell nice too. The paints selected for this facility have low volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs. By minimizing VOCs, the bad smelling chemicals are reduced and the guests of the facility can enjoy clean and fresh indoor air.

The Perfect Splash!

In order to keep the water in the leisure and competition pools clean, filters in the pool mechanical room have a lot of work to do. This community center uses a new filter technology, called regenerative media filters. They use significantly less water, chemicals and energy to keep the pools clean in comparison to traditional sand filters.

Got Sun? Let's use it!

The skylights located along the corridor allow natural light to come in and brighten up the interior. This saves the facility dollars in energy costs because lights are not turned on as often.

VIP Parking!

If you have a fuel efficient vehicle, then you qualify for preferred parking. Driving a fuel efficient vehicle reduces emissions and promotes good fuel economy which is important for our environment.

Pedal Power!

Bike racks are located throughout the community center site for employees and guests of the facility who would like to bike to the center. By riding your bike you promote individual health, and have a positive impact on the community and environment. Please bike safe, and remember to wear a helmet.
